1.Need Help Checking Your Benefits?
Does my medical insurance cover counseling? What's an EAP? We completely understand the challenge you may have in determining your mental health coverage, as sometimes it is managed by a different company than the one printed on your insurance card. The easiest way to determine your benefit is to call the Customer Service line on the back side of your card, often listed as an MH/SA customer service number. Please use our worksheet to prompt you in gathering all the necessary information as you speak with your account representative. It can be downloaded after you complete our online registration form.
2.Do I need an Authorization Number?
Most Employee Assistance Plans (EAPs) require an authorization before you can use that benefit to cover your mental health counseling sessions. Be sure to bring this number with you on your first day of counseling, along with the name of the EAP company itself - this will not be the name of your employer, but is an independent company contracted to privately manage the mental health services that your employer is offering you for free.
3.Do I have a Deductible? Has it been met?
Many insurance companies are now offering High Deductible Health Care plans or Coinsurance plans that require you to pay the contracted rate for your mental health appointments until you reach a set amount, or deductible for your plan. Whether or not you have a deductible to meet first is determined by checking your benefits. Please call the MH/SA customer service number located on the back of your health insurance card to determine the amount of your deductible, and whether or not you have met that requirement.
4.Do I have a Copay?
Some insurance plans require you to fund a copayment at each appointment. The amount of this copay is determined by the contract your employer holds with your insurance company. Please be advised: often the amount of your copay for Mental Health services is not the same as your regular medical copayment. Please call the MH/SA Customer service line located on the back of your insurance card to determine your benefits.
5.Is Couples Counseling Covered? Can my domestic partner see the provider without me present?
Please check your insurance benefits to determine whether couples counseling is covered. Some plans do not cover couples counseling if the couple is not legally married and covered as a family under the plan. Some plans will allow the domestic partner to utilize counseling services without the employee present, others will not. Please call the MH/SA customer service number located on the back of your card to determine your benefits and eligibility for services.
